Google Business Profile FAQs

Why do I need a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile helps your business appear in local search results and on Google Maps. It makes it easier for potential customers to find you, read reviews, and contact you. Your Google Business Profile is what shows up in the local 3-pack. These are the top 3 local businesses that show up at the top of the Google search results page after someone searches for your business category or the services that you offer.

Brand New Profiles

If we’re creating you a brand new Google Business Profile, it usually starts showing up in search results within 72 hours after we verify your profile.

At first, your profile will only show up when someone searches for your business name. It takes some time before your profile will show up when people are searching for the services you offer.

When someone runs a search, Google wants to return the most relevant businesses that are qualified, reputable and trustworthy. Once your profile is optimized, gradually growing your reviews, adding photos of your work, and managing your profile all help to earn trust from Google.

Usually, you need at least 10 reviews on your profile before you start showing up when people are searching for businesses like yours. After you get to 10 reviews, you will start showing up in search results. How high you rank depends on your local market, your competition, and your overall online presence.

Existing Profiles

If you have an existing Google Business Profile, after we optimize your listing your rankings improve within 30 days when people search for the services you offer. How high you rank depends on your competition, the age of your profile, the number of reviews you have, and your overall online presence.

Your business location vs. the location someone is searching from heavily impacts how high you rank. When someone runs a search in the vicinity closest to your business location, you’re more likely to show up. At first, your rankings will improve when people search from locations in your city.

As your online reputation improves with time, and we implement different SEO strategies, you’ll see your rankings improve farther away from your location.

You do need a street address to create your Google Business Profile. However, your street address does not have to be visible to the public.

If you only interact with customers at their location, Google considers you to be a service area business and your address will be hidden. Google will know generally where you are located, so that you can show up in search results when potential customers are searching near your business location.

In our experience, it is helpful to have a street address on your profile. Google has very specific rules about who can show a street address on your profile. Your Local Marketing Specialist will help you figure out if you qualify to show your address on your profile.

The more reviews that you have on your profile, the more credible your business will be – to both Google & potential customers. While there is no specific number of reviews that you need, in our experience there are a few important milestones that signficiantly hep you improve your rankings.

Milestone #1: 10 reviews

Milestone #2: 30 reviews

Milestone #3: 100 reviews

It’s also important that you are continuing to get more reviews each month, even after reaching these milestones.

Reviews are one of the most powerful ranking and trust-building factors for your Google Business Profile. Here’s why:

  • Google Uses Reviews to Understand Your Business – Google scans the written text of reviews to identify keywords related to your services. If your customers mention specific services (e.g., “roof repair,” “kitchen remodel,” or “emergency plumbing”), Google associates your profile with those services, increasing the chances of appearing in relevant search results.

  • Reviews Impact Rankings – The frequency of reviews, overall star rating, and total number of reviews all influence your placement in local search results. Businesses with a steady stream of positive reviews rank higher than those with outdated or few reviews.

  • Credibility & Customer Confidence – Before hiring you, especially for high-cost services like home remodeling or legal work, potential customers need to see proof that you consistently deliver great results. Reviews provide that social proof, making people more comfortable choosing your business over competitors.

  • Competitive Edge – If a customer is comparing businesses and sees yours with 100+ glowing reviews while a competitor has only a handful, they’re far more likely to trust and contact you first.

Consistently gathering and responding to reviews not only improves your visibility on Google but also builds the trust necessary to win more customers.

We recommend adding new photos to your profile once a week. At minimum, you should try to add high-quality photos of your finished projects at least once per month. If your business doesn’t have enough photos to add each month, we recommend adding new photos as often as possible.

It’s important that the photos you post to your Google Business Profile help Google and potential customers learn what it’s like to work with your business. The most important type of photos to share are of your finished work.

You don’t need professional photos, but your photos need to be high-quality with good lighting. Here are a few types of photos we recommend posting:

The more active your Google Business Profile is, the better. Ideally, you’ll update your profile each week with new photos & videos, an update post, and responses to new reviews. It’s also important that you keep your business details up to date and update your hours anytime your business is closed for holidays, vacations, or bad weather.

At minimum, you should update your profile once a month to show Google and potential customers that you’re active and engaging with your potential customers.
